European Union Law (International and European Law)

Nothing compares to EU law. It is neither international nor national law but has characteristics of both. It is a mix of public and private law. It is exceptionally dynamic; and it is only becoming more and more relevant for all areas of law and life. After studying with us, you will no longer be able to pick up a newspaper without seeing EU law issues on every page.

Law students Kim and Laura tell about their Master's European Union Law

Programme European Union Law

The European Union Law Master’s programme provides its students with a solid foundation in substantive and institutional EU Law. Classes are taught by renowned experts in their fields of specialisation and our professors are scholars who are closely connected to one of the university’s research centres of excellence. We integrate the most recent academic insights and legal developments into our curriculum, along with a path towards developing expertise in a specific area of specialisation. For example:

  • foreign relations
  • migration
  • market regulation
  • human rights

Experiential Education

Students of the European Union Law LLM programme are involved participants in interactive courses and extracurricular activities, in other words ‘law in action’. We call this Experiential Education programme the Amsterdam Law Practice.

‘We were able to create our own unique simulation.’

Moot courts, moot lawmaking exercises, individual research projects and supervised work at the Amsterdam International Law Clinic provide our students with the chance to look beyond the black letter of EU Law. They will experience the ways in which it is applied and interpreted as a ‘living instrument’.

With its large number of international law firms, global business headquarters, and proximity to several important EU institutions, Amsterdam is an ideal city for students to experience the value of the Amsterdam Law Practice.

Is this programme for me?

Are you interested in European politics, economics, and the relationships between national and international laws throughout the EU? Would you like to gain hands-on experience in tackling legal problems, and be part of an international student community? If you have a good command of written and spoken English and an international perspective this could be the right LLM programme for you.

Careers in European Union Law

Expertise in a specific area of EU law can make you an attractive candidate for legal positions in the private or public sector. With an LLM degree in European Union law, you will be qualified for careers in:

  • international businesses, law firms or NGOs
  • EU institutions in Brussels, Luxembourg, Strasbourg or other cities which host international authorities
  • The national public sector (ministries, regional – and local government, agencies etc.)
  • consultancy as an independent expert in your area of specialisation

Alternatively you may choose to continue your legal studies and pursue a PhD in European law.

Degree certificate

Upon completion of the European Union Law master’s programme you will earn a legally accredited Master’s degree in International and European Law, and the title Master of Laws (LLM).

For Dutch students with an LLB degree from a Dutch university, completion of the master’s programme in European Union Law fulfils the requirements for ‘civiel effect’.

What makes EU Law unique?

Prof. dr. Christina Eckes explains: 'Nothing compares to EU Law. It does not fit any of the categories of law that you are familiar with from your bachelor studies'
